Technical Information - High resolution scanning of slide/ transparency or negative photographic film. Scans are produced
via MinoltaTM Scan Multi Pro film scanning system utilising
a 48 bit DAC [Digital/ Analogue Converter] which produces a D:max
of 4.8 with 65,536 levels per RGB channel, to provide low noise
and in conjunction with ICC colour profiles, high colour fidelity
scans, latest utility/ driver for compatibility with emulsions both
old and new, mainstream or professional. NB: to edit 48 bit files requires a compatible Image Editing application, most image editors will read 48 bit files as 24 bit, with some software these files may not be opened at all. If in any doubt please contact Moment Scan for more details. Each scan is produced by taking a minimum of two pre scans to ensure optimum results, the scan is produced on the basis of utilising the maximum image area at the required resolution. On request the scan can be produced with a border. Where required medium format scans are taken via a proprietary Anti Newton glass film holder to ensure film flatness during the scanning procedure. Data is recorded onto CDR/ DVDR’s adhering to ISO 9660 mode one specification which allows cross platform use. CD’s are branded and jewel cased. No separate charge is made for CD’s. Original data from scans is available for a minimum of 7 days. DVD recording is recommended on orders of scans producing over 1Gb of data, to take advantage of the formats higher capacity and data reading speeds. DVD-R [dash] or DVD+R [plus] formats are available, both systems claim a 90%+ compatibility with existing drives, see relevant order forms to select one or both formats. Digital ICETM [Image Correction Enhancement] “scratch, dust removal”
this function utilises information from an infra red scanning channel
[@ 4,800 dpi, regardless of the RGB scanning resolution] which provides
a "relief" image of the film surface, advanced algorithms
are applied to digitally clean up the image, available on E6 and
C41 emulsions, including C41 Black and White, it is not suitable
for use on E4 slide or standard process Black and White film. Digital GEMTM [Grain Equalisation + Management]- designed to lower grain size in E6/ C41 images and Digital ROCTM [Reconstruction Of Colour] designed to correct colour faded E6/C41 images are available at extra cost please ask for more information. Kodachrome -may- be compatible with these functions, see Digital ICETM above. The application of either ROCTM or GEMTM adds 100% to the scan prices, use of both GEMTM and ROCTM on the same scan adds 150%. Multi-sampling at 2x, 4x, 8x and 16x also available for film images where the exposure is such that [mainly] shadow areas may lack detail, re-sampling reduces random noise in the image data, this is an added cost option, please ask for details. Black and White images may be scanned as 8 or 16 bit grayscale, or as RGB in 24 /48 bit. The RGB scans produce more data, Red, Green and Blue channels which can be adjusted independently before merging the channels and converting to grayscale. 8 bit/ 16 bit grayscale files are 1/3rd and 2/3rds respectively the size of 24 bit RGB scans. 8 bit grayscale available as Tiff, JPEG or BMP file types. 16 bit grayscale + 48 bit RGB as Tiff files only, requires compatible Image Editor. Scanning to individual specification with adjustments to suit: Scanned resolution
- 35mm format 300 dpi ~ 4,800 dpi, 120/220 200 dpi ~ 4,800
dpi. Output resolution 36 dpi~4,800 dpi, to produce specific output/ print size A4, A3 etc 300dpi is suitable for publication quality printing, modern "Photo - Realistic" printers can produce high quality prints from resolutions of c. 200~300 dpi - this is of course related to the printer in use. For web sites images can be produced with an appropriate resolution typically 72~96 dpi or to spec. Scans can be cropped from a specified size of the film area, or to aspect ratios 10x8, A4, A3 etc. File types 24 bit Tiff, BMP, JPEG [low/ medium or high compression], 48 bit Tiff, or specific file size. ICC colour profile target as listed on ICC Profiles page. ICETM , GEMTM, or ROCTM functions available on suitable E6, C41 images. Scans for web site use - based on required pixel size, eg: 600 x 900 output for 72~96 dpi etc. Please contact should you need images scanned for a specific use not listed. Liability is limited to material [film], processing and scanning only, images of high value should be insured separately.
